Just read about this in the NYT and am already hooked. Turntable.fm is a free new music site that lets you listen to other users as they DJ, rate their mixes and communicate with them (and other listener avatars). It’s nerdy, social and hip at the same time. Choose from rooms like trance, indie, rock, ambient, etc. So far it seems like the site has more electronic rooms than other genres but anyone can create a new area. One more thing: You can only sign up if one of your Facebook friends already has an account. But if you happen to be reading this on FB right now …

… a young person recently turned me onto something that has made my life a lot better since the suspension of Limewire. You can convert any online video to an MP3 for free… like, say, a music video on YouTube, perhaps? I will fully admit that I was not hip enough to discover this on my own but it comes in very, very handy.
Free. I swear. And no software to download—just the converted file.
(Photo via flickr.com/Ferrari + caballos + fuerza = cerebro Humano )Remember that old-school pleasure of loaning books to friends? Now you can swap, borrow or lend e-books on ebookfling.com. Sign up for free and list your Amazon Kindle or Nook titles. When someone requests one of your books, you can lend it for 14 days, after which point it reappears on your reader (or iPhone/Pad, BBerry, etc). Get credits for lending, use those credits to borrow—so easy!
The site is still new and rights to some titles are pending but it’s worth checking out.
Among the glut of invitation-only member deal sites, one of my faves is Lot18, which sells wine at deeply discounted prices straight from the producers. I love being able to try bottles that may not be available at my local wine shop, and the short-term sales often include free or one-cent shipping. Request an invitation from the site, or email me and I will send you one. Cheers!
Founded by Vivendi’s Sophia Kim and TV journalist Lisa Ling, Secret Society of Women is a free website for females to anonymously share their secrets, confessions and admissions with other women. You must create an account to read the boards but it’s an interesting—and sometimes depressingly enlightening—look at what other women are going through. Just when you thought you were totally alone…
